May Spring Bank Holiday Meet
« on: May 27, 2008, 22:00:49 »
Our very first organised laning and social meet ó What can I say.......... (quite a lot as it turns out ;D )

Thanks to everyone that turned up ó I believe everyone enjoyed themselves both during the day and at night.

For those of you that were not aware I lost a cylinder on my engine on the Wednesday before the meet ó too late to do anything for the meet so I just carried on with my new 3 cylinder 1875cc engine which we eventually decided sounded very much like a VW camper :o the only problem was that it would only start on the key when cold ::) never when hot.

So Friday morning arrived, I was awake at 6 or just after looking forward to being the first on site for a change when lo and behold a text arrived from Jynx and Wobbly to announce that they were in Devon and already on site ::) ::)

By 9 I was attracting strange looks as I bought essential supplies in Lidl ó 32 cans of lager and a bottle of milk  8)

From there it was a 15 mile drive to pick up our Van and around the same back to the camp site ó remembering not to switch off the engine while hitching up.

Arrival at the site just after 10 to find we had a substantial slope and not enough blocks to level the vans ó ours and Sals  ::) ó one quick trip to the local recycling centre resolved that.

From then on it was a case of erecting awnings, greeting other members, first of which was Cornish Baldy ó Sean and Karen, and a trip into Kingsbridge to pick up more essential supplies (yep that was lager, cider and wine) ó Oh and some food ??? Constant updates of texts from mule and mitsue informed us of their constant stops for water (for the rad ::) ) TT and CC managed to pass them at their last stop (top of Haldon Hill) and arrived at the campsite first but not much before them.

Den and Vics  were the next to arrive with Nick and Carl arriving last around 11pm but making sure that they hadn't missed all of the Friday night socialising which carried on until.......... (you don't really expect me to remember do you? :o )

Saturday morning dawned (never saw it ó the dawn that is) half the campers wanted to take in the local sites (just can't think why ::) ) 3 wanned to lane one wanted to chill. So the laning commenced localish to the campsite ó none of which I had reccied so....... we missed the first I had marked due to a following car ::) , the next one was very good until my foot slipped on the clutch and stalled the motor ::) ó remember what I said earlier about not being able to start it hot ó I proved it here. Eventually Mule and Cornish Baldy backed up and I managed to start it up ó bump starting it backwards (on a crossaxly lane :o )  We found a lovely set of rock steps but didn't do them because of *my lack of power *Cornish Baldy's nice clean LWB complete with straight steps but they were nice rock steps and have now gone into my filing system for future use  ;)

And so the day carried on until nearly at the end we came to a hill ó not the first I might add ó but my truck was getting slower and slower until eventually I had to go into 4wl to achieve forward motion, but to no avail as soon after with a noisy clatter it emitted a belch of thich black smoke and refused to go any further, we managed to get backed into a gateway allowing just enough room to allow Sean to pass us and attach a tow and eventually tow us back to camp. That evening i drained around 12 to 15 litres of oil and diesel out of my sump and replaced it with 5 litres of clean oil :o :o

Saturday night and party time ó Jynx was asleep by 6.30 (something to do with the bottle of wine she started on at 4 ::) ;D ;D ;D ) but she was back in the picture by 8.30 and was insisting that someone would not be sleeping that night :o (got a vicious streak that girl ;D ;D :D :D :D :D ) Not I refuse to say if that person did get any sleep or not  8) 8) I think the children's playground was tried out (for 'elf and safety reasons you understand) by the errrrrr...... elderly children that night as well ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sunday dawned (never saw that one either) By 10.30 the incessant noise of the engines of 9 trucks ó we had been joined that morning by Simon74 So we move out to the start point ó just 5 miles away and began laning, in the misty wet rain, but before we got too far the mist had gone the rain with it and all was replaced by brilliant sunshine ó we got to the 3rd lane before I stalled the truck ::) A series of winching and pushing got me out to a downhill slope and started again and on we went ó the pics will describe what we drove better than my words so go look at them.

We broke for lunch at the Watermans Arms, Jynx reckoned I was being done paying £9.90 for a pint, 2 cokes and a pineapple juice but I told here 'nah, these were local prices' ::) we moved on after lunch giving the patrons of the pub a spectacle to watch as we crossed the river there via the ford rather than the bridge and 4 lanes later I stalled the engine again :-[ :-[ ó but another bit of winching later and she started on a downhill axle twister ::) ;D ;D and on we went driving floods and rock steps until we came to the last lane and the deepest and biggest rut yet, but with the aid of waffles and winch everyone made it to finish off the end of the 2008 Devon Spring Meet; we eventually made it back to the campsite around 7.30pm after a brilliant day.

What could follow a brilliant day but a brilliant night with bar-b-que and socialising until.......... no please ó I really have no idea ;D ;D :D :D :D

Well the meet had ended on a high and those of us that were left were subjected to a night of high winds and driving rain but did we let it spoil our weekend...........

Did we heck ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;

A video is up at
ó pics are to follow once I sort through 1000 images or so :o :o :o
